#36 - time capsule

As 2010 approaches, your town, amidst much fanfare, is putting together a time capsule that will be opened 50 years from now. The capsule is meant to shed light on this first decade of the century.

In order to gain a broad perspective on the happenings and significance of the decade, a lottery-type drawing was recently held to select ten individual contributors to the capsule, one from each 10-year phase of life (0-9 years old, 10-19, etc; one's age in the year 2009).

You were chosen to represent your age range, 20-29 for most of the readers of this blog (not to discriminate against any other age group).

Each participant in the time capsule project has been asked to supply up to three items to the capsule. The objects should have some personal connection to your life between 2000-2009 while at the same time representing the decade in some fundamental way. If you are unable to choose at least one item for the capsule, you have the option of tabbing another person from your age group to participate in your stead.

What item or items do you submit to the capsule?

Definitely an ipod of some kind, which can be filled with 2000s music, TV, and/or movies. Not sure what else...

I feel like something would need to represent the increased political divisions, but I'm not sure what.

i know this was last week's, but i really like it.

i would do the iPod filed with music (which I stole from the post above), a copy of HP and the Deathly Hallows, and a People magazine during the craziness of Britney.

I <3 Pop culture

I couldn't come up with much besides an iPod. Maybe I could put an album on it from each year of the decade (Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot would be on the iPod at the very least).

Depending on what albums I chose, it could possibly give a sense of what was going on (similar to a newspaper headline).

A digital camera with some photos might be a good choice too, with a spare battery. Digital cameras really took off during these last 10 years.

I think I would have to put something in (newspaper, mag, etc) with the election of our first black president. I think that our generation helped to elect him and I'm pretty proud of that.

I would probably also choose something that would represent the current job market and the amount of 20 somethings having difficulty getting work. Maybe an article of some sort.

Lastly, I think that the ipod sounds like a good enough idea. It certainly is more positive than my job market suggestion. I also like the amount of diverse info you can get on such a small device.

That's my 3!
